No, that’s not a typo. Dive-In Movie Night at The Pearl Hotel is one of the most fun and refreshing activities I’ve done in San Diego in a while! Just like it sounds, you arrive at the swanky, retro Pearl and literally dive into the pool and watch a movie under the stars!

Every Wednesday night at 8pm for several weeks in the summer, The Pearl hosts out-of-towners and locals alike, screening new movies and classics, while slinging delicious food and craft cocktails. If you want to participate but NOT get wet, you can call and reserve a table for poolside dining. You must do this EARLY though, as the space is small and the tables fill up quickly. If you’re too late for a table (like we were), there is space on the pool deck on a first-come, first-serve basis. Being my first time, I was under the impression that, “Oh, it’s a Wednesday, people have to work, I doubt it will be that crowded” but just because I can be type-A from time to time, I planned to get there at 7. It’s a good thing I did because the quaint yet small space was PACKED. They were screening “Anchorman”, a favorite in San Diego, and it seemed to pull in everyone from North Park hipsters to PB bros, all crammed in next to each other, crooning “Afternoon Delight” in sync with the movie. Charming! Our saving grace, was that we BYOF’d (Bring Your Own Floaty!). Surprisingly, not many people had thought of this, so the pool was the one spot in the join with plenty of space. I don’t think you could get away with a giant flamingo, as you would be blocking people’s view, but I went on Amazon and found cute little round pineapples ($9 each!) for my girlfriends and I that worked perfectly – not too big but allowed us to keep our heads, and our cocktails, above water! Cocktails were delicious, with cheeky names. Regarding food, it all looked amazing, but a word to the wise: we had planned on grabbing appetizers to share but the limited space and chaos of all the people made it nearly impossible. If you do want to get your grub on, I highly recommend reserving a table. If not, plan to eat before or after you go.

Overall, this was an absolutely delightful experience that my girlfriends and I are looking forward to doing again. We might even plan a little staycation with our boys! Info on The Pearl Hotel and Dive-In Movie schedule for the rest of summer can be found below!
